Rising Scholars
The focus of Fullerton College’s Rising Scholars Program is to support students impacted by the carceral system in achieving and exceeding their academic and personal goals. By using an asset-based approach and evidence-based practices, the program offers practical, real-world solutions that promote student development through education.
Goals
- Recruit and Retain: Actively recruit and retain students affected by the carceral system.
- Provide Accessible Services: Offer personalized and accessible support services.
- Facilitate Transfer and Career Placement: Guide students through the transfer process and toward career placement.
- Empower Achievement: Support students in pursuing intellectual, educational, and vocational success.

- Reduce Recidivism, Increase Degree Attainment: Positively impact regional recidivism rates while boosting degree completion.

We believe that hose with lived experience as leaders adds authenticity and credibility to the program, showing that real change comes from those who have walked the path. It also empowers students to shape solutions to mass incarceration, grounded in firsthand knowledge = “We have the solutions”.
Education as Public Safety:
Education is the #1 reducer of recidivism. We reinforce education’s importance as a preventative measure, not only as a tool to transform student lives but also as a contribute to a safer, more resilient community.
